THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CIVIL LAW
AND CRIMINAL LAW | MISSISSAUGA LAWYER

Many prospective clients will call with questions regarding the difference between civil law and criminal law.

Some people ask if they can criminally charge a company for not paying them properly. Some people will ask if they can start a lawsuit for something that might not necessarily be considered civil.

A great deal can be written on this topic. However, I will try to describe the distinction briefly.

Civil law deals primarily with disputes that people have amongst each other that includes companies. For example, you loaned money tosomeone and they won’t pay it back. It can also involve a situation where you might have been assaulted and are now looking to sue.

Criminal law deals largely with the state. For example, getting arrested. In the situation of an
assault you would report it to the police and they would follow up with whether or not criminal charges should be laid.

If you are dealing with a civil matter its best to speak with a civil litigation lawyer.

If you are dealing with a criminal matter its best to speak with a criminal lawyer.

If you have any questions feel free to call my office.
